Believe me, I have experienced this exact same problem, I even made a post about it a while back, but no one knew what the hell I was talking about.
The problem is the Xbox itself. End of story. Get a new one. The problem only gets worse from that point, and eventually any game you play on there will begin to fuck up, not just Shenmue. By the time I decided to get a new Xbox, my old one wouldn't even load up to the main Xbox screen, let alone the game itself. I'd just get a weird black screen when I'd turn it on and that's it. And on my new Xbox, everything works perfectly again, even my copy of Shenmue II that I thought had gotten scratched or something.
Word of advice though: Get a new Xbox quick, and with a memory card so that you can transfer you're old hard drive data to the new one. I regret waiting so long to get a new one, because now I don't have any access to my old save data. And it SUCKS losing that kinda stuff.
So do it quick. Or you'll regret it later.

Errors and Microsoft go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Yup.
Fairly simple operation, once you remove the Xbox case you simply remove the old one(some unscrewing necessary) plug in the new one and put the case back on your Xbox.

Thanks Jeff. And yes, you should just get a Samsung and do it yourself. So long as you don't mind about losing your warranty.

If he had a warranty he could just get it fixed for free.

I think that has less to do with the Xbox and more to do with the fact that Morrowind is an extremely buggy game. I love it, but it's discouraging how randomly it freezes - even with the GotY "fixes."

All these comments are a bit unfair. All machines are prone to errors, especially as they age, and the problem doesn't lie exclusively with Microsoft. As I said, I have a first-gen Xbox and it runs the majority of my games fine. In the rare occurence I have frequent problems with a game, I find more often than not it has something to do with the game, not the system. Morrowind and KOTOR II, for example, which have numerous bugs and glitches (at least certain batches of discs). So does this mean I've just been lucky? No, I think it can be attributed more to the fact that a few of you have been unlucky, or just careless with your Xbox and/or games. That doesn't mean you can make negative generalizations about an entire corporation and their products. Shit happens, but don't get bitter just because it happened to you.

i complain about the xb version all the time but not these kinds of bugs.
now that you mention it, my first copy did crash 3 times and not load a few times too. i got the screen of death once, that really scared me("your xbox need servicing etc" its black with a number in the corner)
after a month i tried to get a refund but the bar stuard at hmv wouldnt do it, he did swap the disk though.
no probs since.
i still like the dc version more!
